SS-31 / Elamipretide research, identity and evidence limits

Elamipretide, also called SS-31, is the ingredient in Forzinity, approved for a defined Barth-syndrome population. That narrow approval does not establish general anti-aging use.

Identity and formulation

SS-31 is a mitochondria-targeted peptide studied under the name elamipretide. Forzinity is a particular pharmaceutical formulation; a vendor’s SS-31 sample is not automatically the approved product.

Mitochondrial function is a broad biological topic. A study of one disorder or model cannot establish treatment of every condition associated with mitochondrial changes.

What the studies show

FDA granted accelerated approval in September 2025 to improve muscle strength in adults and children with Barth syndrome weighing at least 30 kg. Approval relied on an intermediate muscle-strength endpoint and requires further confirmation of clinical benefit. The clinical record should be read together with the negative randomized walking and fatigue results, rather than reduced to a blanket proven or unproven label.

The randomized period did not show superiority on the main walking-distance and fatigue endpoints; longer open-label observations showed increased knee-extensor strength. A tiny rare-disease sample and an uncontrolled extension limit inference; accelerated approval is not confirmation of every claimed clinical benefit.

SS-31 improved selected mitochondrial respiration and supercomplex-organization measures without correcting the measured monolysocardiolipin-to-cardiolipin ratio. Mechanistic improvement in a mouse model is not evidence of broad rejuvenation or correction of the underlying genetic defect.

Protein-interaction mapping using mitochondrial preparations

The investigators identified interactions with proteins involved in mitochondrial metabolism and energy-related processes. An interaction map does not establish clinical effectiveness for an unrelated disease or longevity use.

For the differences between a mechanism, a biomarker and a clinical outcome, see the evidence-reading guide.

How to interpret the findings

An intermediate clinical endpoint may support accelerated approval while leaving the ultimate clinical benefit to be confirmed. This distinction should remain visible beside the approved indication.

A positive laboratory respiration measure and a meaningful improvement in daily function are different outcomes. The same applies to changes in muscle strength versus walking distance or fatigue.

The appropriate comparison is the exact product in its studied population. Neither the drug’s approval nor a mechanistic paper authenticates a research vial.

Safety context

The Forzinity label reports injection-site reactions and hypersensitivity, including serious allergic reactions. Its formulation contains benzyl alcohol and must not be used in neonates.

The approved population and monitoring context do not establish safety in healthy adults seeking enhancement or in other unstudied circumstances.

Study exposure and units

Separate the randomized crossover period from the open-label extension. Duration, comparator and endpoint differ, so their results cannot be merged into one placebo-controlled effect.

Read approved exposure information in the current product label and clinical context. Animal protocols and general research-vial listings cannot supply an equivalent regimen.

Match any reported amount or concentration to the exact material, route, population and duration in the original experiment. Read the guide to mass, volume and concentration for the meaning of common units. A calculation cannot establish an appropriate treatment or validate an untested formulation.

Product identity and report checks

Verify whether documentation identifies elamipretide and the particular formulation, rather than a generic mitochondrial peptide. Sequence and terminal chemistry need an exact match.

Distinguish analytical identity from authenticated Forzinity supply. A certificate cannot transfer the pharmaceutical product’s approval to an independently prepared material.

Keep the clinical evidence and the supplier evidence separate. Use the report-verification steps to check the issuer and the batch questions to connect a tested sample with the product offered. Compare prices using the delivered-cost method rather than an isolated discount or purity percentage.

Peptide Serum operates a store as well as this research library. The supplier directory contains imported seller information; a listing is not laboratory certification. Read how this library is prepared and evaluate the documentation for the exact lot offered. A seller rating does not establish clinical safety or effectiveness.

Common questions

Is SS-31 still entirely unapproved in the United States?

No. Forzinity received a specific accelerated approval in 2025. It is inaccurate to ignore that approval or to expand it into approval of all SS-31 products and uses.

Did the randomized Barth trial meet its main walking and fatigue endpoints?

No. The approval rationale instead includes the muscle-strength findings and a requirement to confirm clinical benefit.

Does cardiolipin-related research prove age reversal?

No. A mitochondrial mechanism does not establish a human longevity outcome.

How to attribute and preserve the context
  1. Place a visible Peptide Serum citation beside the relevant claim, table or passage; do not substitute a general homepage link.
  2. Identify what you reused, and distinguish our compilation or interpretation from an original study or supplier statement.
  3. Keep links and credit to the primary studies, trial registries, supplier listings and other original sources supporting the material.
  4. For price comparisons, preserve currency, units, vial or pack size, sample count, observation dates, exchange-rate date and exclusions.
  5. Keep provisional labels, methodological limits and evidence caveats. A price comparison does not establish equivalent product quality.
  6. Check the live source before describing prices, availability or research status as current; record your actual access date.
  7. Label quotations, adaptations and recalculations accurately. Do not imply Peptide Serum endorsed your work.
