How to attribute and preserve the context
  1. Place a visible Peptide Serum citation beside the relevant claim, table or passage; do not substitute a general homepage link.
  2. Identify what you reused, and distinguish our compilation or interpretation from an original study or supplier statement.
  3. Keep links and credit to the primary studies, trial registries, supplier listings and other original sources supporting the material.
  4. For price comparisons, preserve currency, units, vial or pack size, sample count, observation dates, exchange-rate date and exclusions.
  5. Keep provisional labels, methodological limits and evidence caveats. A price comparison does not establish equivalent product quality.
  6. Check the live source before describing prices, availability or research status as current; record your actual access date.

Complete research for Melanotan 1

The updated research profile and study-exposure context appear below, with source links and evidence limitations.

Research-use context This source material is not medical advice, a treatment recommendation, or instructions for human or veterinary use.

Melanotan I / Afamelanotide research, identity and evidence limits

Afamelanotide, also called Melanotan I, is used in an approved implant for adults with erythropoietic protoporphyria. This does not approve online tanning preparations.

Identity and formulation

The National Cancer Institute lists Melanotan I as a synonym for afamelanotide. It is distinct from the cyclic Melanotan II molecule and from bremelanotide.

Scenesse is a defined prescription implant. Formulation and release properties are part of that product, not a minor detail that can be removed when discussing the evidence.

What the studies show

The strongest reviewed evidence comes from two controlled trials in adults with erythropoietic protoporphyria, a condition involving painful light reactions. The outcome was pain-free light exposure in this population. Cosmetic tanning, prevention of skin cancer and treatment with an unspecified powder are different questions.

Selected directly relevant studies and their limits
Study and design Finding What it does not establish
Afamelanotide for Erythropoietic Protoporphyria

Two multicenter randomized double-blind placebo-controlled implant trials, with 74 European and 94 US participants

Reading scope: PubMed abstract

Afamelanotide increased pain-free sunlight exposure and improved quality-of-life measures in adults with erythropoietic protoporphyria. The trials concern a particular implant and diagnosed population, not general cosmetic use or an interchangeable injectable preparation.
Increased eumelanin expression and tanning is induced by a superpotent melanotropin in humans

Early human pigmentation and skin-biopsy study of Melanotan I

Reading scope: PubMed abstract excerpt

Pigmentation changes were observed at several assessed sites, with biochemical measurements of skin pigment. Pigmentation is not evidence of prevention of skin cancer or a demonstration that ultraviolet exposure becomes harmless.

For the differences between a mechanism, a biomarker and a clinical outcome, see the evidence-reading guide.

How to interpret the findings

The benefit established for a rare phototoxic disorder should not be broadened into a general safe-tanning promise. An outcome measured in hours of tolerated light exposure also differs from a claim about long-term skin damage.

Older studies may use different routes from the approved implant. A shared ingredient does not establish equal exposure, duration or risk.

Product approval and chemical identity are separate facts. A laboratory may identify afamelanotide in a sample without establishing that the sample is Scenesse or satisfies the approved product specifications.

Safety context

The current Scenesse label warns about serious hypersensitivity and darkening of existing nevi or freckles, with skin monitoring. It continues to advise sun and light protection. Pigmentation is not permission to increase harmful exposure.

Study exposure and units

A controlled-release implant cannot be compared with a powder by simply matching milligrams. Release, route and administration setting shape exposure.

Read historical pigmentation studies as research protocols, not as cosmetic tanning schedules. Their designs do not justify copying or converting exposures.

Match any reported amount or concentration to the exact material, route, population and duration in the original experiment. Read the guide to mass, volume and concentration for the meaning of common units. A calculation cannot establish an appropriate treatment or validate an untested formulation.

Product identity and report checks

Verify the exact afamelanotide identity rather than a generic melanotan label. Distinguish ingredient documentation from authenticated packaging and supply records for the prescription implant.

Check whether a cited clinical paper used an implant or another preparation. If the offered material differs, that difference belongs beside the claimed benefit.

Keep the clinical evidence and the supplier evidence separate. Use the report-verification steps to check the issuer and the batch questions to connect a tested sample with the product offered. Compare prices using the delivered-cost method rather than an isolated discount or purity percentage.

Peptide Serum operates a store as well as this research library. The supplier directory contains imported seller information; a listing is not laboratory certification. Read how this library is prepared and evaluate the documentation for the exact lot offered. A seller rating does not establish clinical safety or effectiveness.

Common questions

Are Melanotan I and Melanotan II interchangeable?

No. They are different molecules with different evidence and formulations. An approval involving afamelanotide cannot be transferred to Melanotan II.

What is Scenesse approved for in the United States?

Increasing pain-free light exposure in adults with a history of phototoxic reactions from erythropoietic protoporphyria, using the specified implant.

Does a tanning response establish sunscreen-like protection?

No. The cited pigmentation study does not establish a general sun-protection factor or skin-cancer prevention.

Melanotan I / Afamelanotide: study exposure and units

This companion to the Melanotan I / Afamelanotide research profile explains how to interpret experimental quantities. It provides no personal-use regimen.

Read exposure in its original context

A controlled-release implant cannot be compared with a powder by simply matching milligrams. Release, route and administration setting shape exposure.

Read historical pigmentation studies as research protocols, not as cosmetic tanning schedules. Their designs do not justify copying or converting exposures.

Find the tested material, formulation, route, study population, comparison group and observation period in the original paper. Exposure in a cell system or animal model does not supply a human starting amount, schedule or route.

Mass, volume and concentration describe different things

Mass describes an amount of material; concentration describes that amount per final solution volume. One milligram equals 1,000 micrograms. Neither a vial label nor arithmetic establishes identity, stability, sterility or an appropriate use.

Read the units reference and the study summaries and their limitations. Use the original methods for the precise experimental conditions; do not transfer a reported amount between different materials or study models.

Continue with the evidence

The main profile links the selected primary sources, distinguishes the study designs and explains what the findings cannot show. A trial registration is a research plan, not a published result.
